what should the initial speed have been to just make the putt?

EXPUTT Golf game PUTTING SIMULATOR
Official MGS Forum Member Review

===
In Brief... ExPutt provides a convenient way to do putting at home, helping a golfer work on both starting line and distance command on putts from 5 to 50 feet, and at dark-green speeds from vi to 13. A "Challenge" mode adds a way to work on breaking putts; a "Play" mode provides an added layer of realism / immersion - allowing upward to 4 players (in the same room, not virtually) to compete confronting each other putting out on each of ix holes. Then a squeamish combination of serious practice and serious fun!
All the same, being a software simulation .. and depending on your private putting style .. a golfer may need to suit to "seeing" the distance to the hole and "reading" the breaks as they're projected on your 2D screen. On-screen guides and hints aid in visualization though do require a little getting used to.
In that location are, imho, some user interface and usability issues that could be enhanced to make the product even easier to use and empathize. Some of the data displays could be presented differently, and adding more than flexibility in setting options could farther enhance the overall experience.
Bottom line... ExPutt can be a useful tool for any golfer ... especially those without access to a quality practice green ... and it allows for a more than varied do versus standard flat, limited length mats. I found it to be fun, engaging and – most importantly – a definite benefit to my actual on-course putting.

Product setup..
..began mid-July and we worked through in stages – starting with initial setup / first impressions.
I'yard certain I was the about nerdy
most setup as I read through the user manual first – and learned that the camera expects to be prepare within both a certain height range off the floor and a certain horizontal distance from the front edge of the mat. Other testers had commented most issues with lighting – that resulted in some putts not being read by the system – and so I was careful to consider that in my setup as well.
A few setup pics...
FYI: the side by side few pages in this thread .. later on these Official Review posts .. contain each tester'due south experiences in getting the ExPutt from the box to recording putts.
Product testing..

Equally it turned out, working through each mode this way was a dainty progression when you lot consider that many golf coaches recommend yous dissever your practice into...
.. block (eg. working on a specific function of your swing at the range) then
.. random (eg. hitting different clubs or shots after each brawl) so
.. pressure (eg. hitting a unlike club at a unlike target each fourth dimension, as if you were on the course, and score yourself on how close you were to your targets).
There were lots of proficient discussions on unlike aspects of each phase amongst the testers, so I (once more) encourage interested readers to browse further through this thread.
OK ... on to the scoring criteria!
QUALITY OF COMPONENTS
Score: 8 of 10
The hardware components – camera, mat, remote – seem to be of decent enough quality but I just felt that...
(a) photographic camera – the plastic riser pieces that attach the cam to the weighted base or optionally to the stick-on Idiot box mount practise non appear to me solid enough and I was treating them very gingerly; nor exercise they fit very snugly into the base or the Tv set mount.
Notation : all software and the processing system is fully independent inside the camera housing. Also note the units we received are .. I'm guessing .. the third major version (or: first full production release later blastoff (trial) and beta (wider testing) versions; labeled "300D" on the User Transmission and "300EN" on the startup screen).
(b) mat – the smooth surface seems well-bonded to the safe bankroll, and and so far shows no sign of vesture from use. The daze-absorbing foam at the receiving cease of the ball seems suited to the task, and looks like information technology could exist replaced hands enough if it ever needed to be. The mat's rubber itself, though, while I'm sure was well-tested for weight vs portability compromise ... ie. if a user were to roll information technology upwards and store it later on every use .. could exist a fleck heavier material to assistance it lay apartment and to smooth out whatever highs/lows coming through from the surface it's laying on.
(c) remote – functional but seems a tad lightweight then exist careful when young kids are around.
EASE OF Utilize
Score: 7 of x
While it's very unproblematic to just turn on and first putting, in that location are a number of user interface elements and navigation usability items throughout that I feel could exist further simplified and refined (one). To fully sympathize your way in and around the whole system is best done by reading through the user transmission while y'all are setting up, and too first time running through each mode.
(ane) Retrieve of looking at an iPhone screen – information technology's always immediately and completely obvious what is happening on the screen, what the phone is doing and what input information technology expects from the user – anyone tin can pick it upwardly and use it (as well .. who has read an iPhone user transmission???)
In various parts of ExPutt I see things that, imho, are not ever immediately and completely obvious nor quick to find or understand.
A few quick examples range from...
...simple – in the Primary Programme Settings is an option called "BGM" .. why not label this what it is .. "Background Music"?
...to a niggling complicated your offset time through – in Challenge manner you striking 1 to 3 balls .. which varies dependent on your first or 2d putt success .. from each of iii randomly assigned positions on 9 different greens; the on-screen prompts showing you at what point y'all are at in the round could exist made much clearer.
...to more complicated to observe and navigate into – Practice manner affords a "Putting Analysis" simply (a) there two different paths in to get started ... and several clicks on the remote are required; (b) once started the on-screen cue is a faint white inaugural number; and (c) information technology requires exactly thirty putts (no more than, no less; and presumably .. but not obviously .. it ignores all prior putts in the electric current practice session)...
So... instead of all this, why not simply always present the user with an option to view the assay data screens after they exit the current practice session (ie. no carve up input during practice required)?
Besides, every bit one alternative possibly add an selection in practice settings to "Clear all prior information?" so a user could easily run multiple analyses – eg. one user testing out multiple putters, or maybe multiple users practicing together.
Initial Setup...
While it is possible to catch everything out of the box and beginning putting inside a few minutes – assuasive the on-screen "Searching For Mat" process to prompt you on locating the mat – in that location are actually several important details that are spread over several pages in the (32 page) User Transmission.
This is a case where the product could benefit from including a separate, very clearly drawn and annotated setup diagram; highly visible in the packaging ... eg. a "Read Me Commencement!" canvass.
Small, but worth mentioning – the User Manual could exist better edited for brevity and clarity.
Understanding Settings...
Again, information technology's possible to putt without irresolute whatever settings and only leaving all the defaults; just this is a case where scanning through the User Manual is helpful so at least y'all'll know what'south bachelor and where to look (especially if you're a lefty). On the plus side, within whatsoever of three modes ane press of the aforementioned "Menu" push button on the remote brings up the available settings for that mode.
Agreement the Three Modes...
Inbound each mode presents an overview/instruction screen, with text on the left and an annotated image of that stage's screen in the heart...
I'd suggest less text / more use of short bullet points; while the diagram could be larger and suspension out the callout text to outside the image frame ... to make it all more than easily scannable / "digestible".
At that place's also a timeout after which this help screen gives manner to the "alive" screen – maybe alter that to have the user click "OK" to proceed (similar to other screens in the system).
But note this aforementioned info is available in corresponding sections within the user manual.
Bones CHARACTERISTICS / USAGE
Score: 25 of 30
Getting used to putting...
Subsequently I put the mat down I went and hit a few putts, without the camera and screen on, to go a feel for rolling the ball across it. It felt shine and looked like the ball rolled true to its starting line (bold the mat is on a flat, level surface!).
Notwithstanding ... my style of putting includes a picking a spot on my aim line right in front of the brawl that I'll scroll the ball over, and that'southward not and then easy on the mat's matte black surface...
--> in this film I lightened the exposure to highlight the details.
At that place is a set of blackness marks 1 human foot in front of the "ready" zone where you place the ball, only it's not like shooting fish in a barrel for these onetime optics to pick out. According to a source at ExPutt the addition of any markings onto the mat is strongly discouraged as it could interfere with the camera's ability to judge the progress of the ball after information technology's hit.
Then at first I institute myself looking upwards to the two sets of marks at the front of the mat (at 0.five meter and 2 feet in front of the "ready" zone).
I experimented with trying to gear up a laser pointer for an aim spot but and then was spending more time trying to line upwardly my ball exactly in-line with the laser spot and a center mark at the front of the mat, so I just ditched that – especially subsequently I tested and decided as long as you whorl the brawl directly from whatever position inside the "ready" zone, the system will recognize information technology as a direct putt.
So at present I orient the line on the ball "directly" and focus on the dorsum of the brawl when putting.
...The next step was go into Practise fashion and get a feel for hitting straight and for putting speed.
Practice...
Yes, the first few putts were all over the identify simply it was like shooting fish in a barrel to adapt. The real time data updates after each putt provide meaningful feedback and help y'all work on your putting stroke. I too speedily discovered that dark-green speed 10 is faster than near of the muni greens where I typically play .. information technology felt more than like private gild greens; 9 seemed more than inline with the munis.
With a click of the "Menu" button on the remote you admission the Settings, merely changing things requires a number of arrow presses and "OK" clicks to select and set each option and and so to become downward to the final "OK" to apply all options and go back to your practice session.
"Analysis" in the Settings shown in a higher place starts a 30-putt putting analysis; at the end you're asked if you want to review the results or non (wouldn't you?!?) and then the iii analysis screens are presented (not shown here .. add'l comments beneath).
Subsequently trying out various settings, I pretty quickly focused on "Dark-green Speed" of 10 at "Random" distances with a "Max" of 30 feet. And the "Blossom" background looks pleasant (just changes the motion-picture show; the practice greenish is always flat and level).
One identify where ExPutt Practise has actually been helping me is to refine my distance control – in my putting I'd get a feel for the altitude to the pigsty visually then react to that to determine my stroke (..if that makes sense?) ... and now, afterward being able to practise at various distances I've started to piece of work out a calibration for my stroke, then now a part of my pre-putt procedure is to "guesstimate" the altitude to the hole and rehearse the respective stroke length.
Challenge...
For the adjacent level of practice, you now face breaking putts and scoring over a 9 hole putting circular. Getting used to reading the breaks does require some learning and getting used to; on-screen tools are provided merely non all of these may exist useful to you.
There are Settings available to select a green speed (same as in Practise) and a "Course" difficulty – ranging from "Spring" (easiest) thru "Summertime" (slightly harder) then "Fall" (harder) to "Winter" (hardest).
Here's a vid clip of accessing Claiming mode from the main startup screen and changing settings...
The computer graphics of the greens practise a decent job of trying to evidence you shading and lighter / darker areas to provide some depth and perspective; ie. represent a 3D space onto a second screen. Random thought: since the green is not moving (like a scene in a video game) perhaps a more than realistic terrain photo could exist superimposed on summit of the greens?
The on-screen interruption reading tools include...
- "meridian change" in feet / inches betwixt the ball and the pigsty (-0' 9" in blueish here)
- (note that's just point to bespeak .. some breaks may have other uphill/downhill in-between)
- Downhill is marked with a "-" minus sign just uphill doesn't show a "+".
- "water drop" filigree overlaying the green; the drops are moving from higher to lower areas and the relative speed indicates the relative gradient forth each grid line.
- I'd like to see an choice to hide / show this.
- "heat" (or contour, or topo) map at the upper-right; the colour calibration indicates the transition from higher (brighter) to lower (darker) areas.
- I'd like to see an overlay line between the ball and the pigsty; every bit you arrange your aim this line moves to reverberate that.
- "Hints" strip ("?" button on remote, or mat) displays three values along the bottom of the screen...
- Ball Speed – as a metric other testers found this useful just I did non; I don't know how to hitting a brawl at exactly, say, 5.vi mph.
- Bending to Hole – starts out at 0.0 and increments as yous aim right or left; again, I found no utility in this value.
- Aim Altitude from Hole – indicates how far left or right to set your aim; this hint is useful when starting out every bit you can adjust the aim until it goes to 0' 0" ... and then yous commencement to learn how much break the system is looking for. Notation that "L" ways the hole is to theleft of your aim line ... then yous adjust your aim to the right(?!?).
- fyi .. I no longer use the hints.
- "Lowered" or kneeling position - not shown in this motion-picture show - (down arrow on remote, or "H"-looking symbol on mat) - adjusts the on-screen perspective to mimic you kneeling behind your ball.
- Useful in some situations and not in others ... found myself using this less and less – vs my bodily on-course experience where I most ever practise; looking at the heat/topo map I try to "run into" my intended putting line fatigued on at that place.
So aiming can be a chip of an acquired talent. The showtime several times trying to practise it without the "Hints" I plant myself way under-reading the break, which is opposite my typical on-course experience. But afterward a while you do start to figure it out, and it becomes a fun .. well .. challenge
to ignore the hints and prepare your own line.
The Challenge stage is setup to let you iii chances to figure out each interruption and become the ball within iii feet of the hole; first try earns more than points vs second endeavor, second more than third and in that location'south a +3 betoken bonus for holing out on whatsoever try (or zero if 3 misses outside of 3 ft). After a putt is holed or within three feet you're moved to the next position on the same green, until you've putted from three different positions on each of 9 greens (so total of 27 positions yous're putting from). Note this mode is single player only.
Although the simulation seems to put y'all into some strange spots sometimes, Challenge does provide an excellent mode to practice .. let's phone call it .. existent plenty for indoors breaking putts of varying types. The add-on of scoring (where loftier score "wins") is a prissy feature to push you into an "every stroke counts" mindset.
...Ane thing that I'd like to encounter added within this mode is a new option to keep working on a particular putt; for case, yous run into one kind of break you lot'd similar to spend more time working on ... and then yous could click an option to "Stay in this Position" and keep rolling putts from there ... and not count score while its active ... and then go dorsum and pick up where yous left off in the Challenge round.
Play...
Play looks only like Claiming, and has the same greenish-/intermission-reading tools, except here afterwards your first putt the second is from the spot that the beginning putt stopped at – so you have to hole out in as few strokes as possible, simply like in an actual golf game. Play way as well allows up to four players – together in the same room, not nearly – to compete confronting each other.
Two notable differences from Challenge mode is that in Play to earn a concede your ball must stop inside of 2 feet, vs three ft in Claiming; and so the pigsty capture in Play seemed more strict – that is, your line and speed had to exist more precise for the brawl to drop vs Challenge or Practice. On the one hand this could be considered a good increased level of force per unit area in your practice, but otoh some curt putts did not driblet where out on the course it seemed that they would (all the testers agreed on this point).
Overall Play provides an excellent added dimension to the product, although ... and this is a critique of Practice mode merely since in Challenge y'all have to put from 3' 1" and in Play from 2' ane" then these shorter distances should exist bachelor in Practice.
ON-Grade PERFORMANCE AND BENEFITS
Score: 15 of 15!
ExPutt – despite my numerous comments on interface / usability issues – provides a great way to practice ... anytime correct at dwelling ... putts of varying distances up to 50 feet, putts on faster or slower greens and breaking putts of all different types.
Afterwards only a few uses I've found that my live on-course putting has improved...
- Starting Line
- Practice mode forces y'all to focus on this chemical element of your putting; the putter data and visual feedback of watching your ball roll towards the hole – on a known flat, level surface – helps ingrain ameliorate stroke mechanics.
- Distance Command
- Practice fashion, using my fave Random distances, affords the opportunity to / forces you to hit a different length putt every time. This is a huge benefit for working on calibrating stroke length to putt distance. Bonus – hit as many assurance equally you like and yous never have to walk around and choice upwardly whatsoever of them!
- Reading – and putting over – Breaks
- How oftentimes do you lot actually get to exercise this? And, repeatedly? While, yes – it's a computer simulation and a virtual 3D picture onto a second screen – I'll counter that any practice is practiced practice, but more importantly - that by paying attention to how far high / low / long / short your commencement putt is you can build up your "mental database" of more/less break with more/less speed to put to use in varying on-course situations.
OK, so now ...
With respect to that $64,000 Question:
"Does the ExPutt assist better your bodily, on-course putting?"
In my initial Intro review I'd outlined some then-current putting stats and out the post-obit iii goals...
- How shut am I leaving the i st putt, from any starting altitude / whatsoever slope?
- How good am I at sinking ii nd putts, from any starting altitude?
- How, let's call it, efficient is my putting in terms of # anxiety of putts made vs total offset putt distance?
... and while I just have a few rounds then far to compare to my initial numbers – at this signal I can definitively state that I'grand improving on each of those items, that is...
- More beginning putts are but missing the hole and finishing closer – ie. more like shooting fish in a barrel tap-ins vs human knee-knocker second putts;
- More than viii – ten footers are just missing the hole and a few are starting to drop, plus I feel more confident over those pesky four – 5 footers and am sinking a few more of those;
- So given #2 just listed I'll accept to preliminarily conclude that, yeah, I've started to sink a few more than feet of putts in my more recent rounds.
And, please note, re: iii-putts – my pre-testing stats showed an average of 1.four per 9 holes; my concluding 4 ix-hole rounds I had merely ane x three-putt each time (although.. technically the final round's 3-putt was a 2-putt every bit I started from the fringe and misjudged the downhill speed then ran the ball waaay past the pigsty .. but the 2nd (or first? ha ha) putt was an "well-nigh"!).
Short reply to the $64,000 Question: Yes!
MISCELLANEOUS
Score: 10 of xv
Overall ExPutt provides varied ways to practise and improve, simply ... there are a number of things that I consider could be improve programmed / presented and things that are missing / would be nice to have; some of these include...
Practice Settings..
.. you can select "Fixed", "Random" or "Increasing" putt distances and a "Max Altitude". Here if y'all were to select "Fixed" and "Max" of 5 feet y'all'd only be putting 5 footers .. there's nothing shorter available in Exercise way .. which seems like an oversight as in Challenge yous may be putting from 3' one" and in Play mode you may be putting from 2' 1".
.."Increasing" is very limited .. select this and, say, "Max" of 30 anxiety and yous accept iv putts = 5, 10, 20, 30 and and then the cycle repeats. Needs to add more putts per wheel, eg. 15, 25; plus – why non a "Decreasing" option? Or.. combine both "Increasing" and "Decreasing" into i "Ladder Drill"?
.."Max Distance" – again, if "5" is available equally a Max then there must be shorter putts bachelor; also I'd similar to meet "n5" distances .. eg. 15, 25, 35.
..add new feature: "Slope" – let the user to angle the practice green from +/- i to, say, +/-5 degrees; would permit an in-betwixt mode from Practice to Challenge and let the user practice both left-to-correct and correct-to-left breaking putts on varying slopes/distances.
Practice screen interface...
The first fourth dimension in this screen appears very decorated. Anyone who has been on a launch monitor and/or had a putter fitting will appreciate all the data, but this is another area where the interface could be cleaned up – existing information could exist more clearly presented, duplicated data could be removed (putter path and face angle at impact appear three(!) times, and ... new information could exist shown.
--> y'all tin see Putter Path = "R0.9" in this pic three times .. and "Bear on Angle" = "L0.0" twice
.. plus each value is represented once again as a graphic in the putter path plot to the left of the green...
I feel this whole presentation could be re-engineered; I become more in-depth in this critique...
* New information I'd like to run across presented...
- Altitude From Pigsty on concluding putt
- The arrangement already tracks distance from hole as information technology's a part of "Putting Analysis" ... so why not make it available real-time with every putt?
- Average Distance From Hole over all putts
- Boilerplate Distance From Hole for each altitude category = 5-10, x-20, 20-thirty, 30-40, twoscore-50
- You are shown this visually on the Practice Summary screen through 5 dispersion plots, but there are no values.
- Number of Makes / %tge / Total Putts for each distance category and over all putts
- Your selected Practice Settings reflected on-screen – at present see merely Dark-green Speed
- should include "Distance Mode" (eg. "Random") and "Max Distance" (eg. "thirty")
- Same comment applies to the Practice Summary, Putting Assay screens.
- If possible with the system/camera – Impact Location on the putter face as a graphic
- If possible with the arrangement/photographic camera – Backstroke Length
Practice Summary screen...
Later the decorated Practice screen, the Summary screen with your results seems strangely "tranquility"...
The separate dispersion plots are helpful, but I'd like to run across more numbers displayed – particularly those for "Makes", "Misses" and "Average Altitude From Hole", etc. ,etc. – overall and for each distance category.
"Distance Deviation" could be better explained - it'snot a straight measure of your misses, it's the standard divergence of all your misses ... and so gives no information well-nigh the actual distance from the hole of any of your misses. A small number indicates a lesser dispersion of all your misses.
So... Just every bit an example presentation for Makes / Misses / Distance From Hole, here'due south a sample chart / data tabular array I drew up in a spreadsheet...
And here'southward a few infinitesimal video critique of diverse elements I see in the Practise Summary screen...
Challenge mode...
Mentioned above, simply I'd like to meet an choice to "Stay At This Position" to allow the user to keep working on a specific break ... and append scoring while doing so; then set this option "Off" to render to the spot y'all left in the Challenge circular.
Another useful addition equally a training aid could be to projection a organization-suggested putting line as a new faint, white overlay line atop the h2o droplet grid ... so subsequently yous hitting your putt ... testify a red shot tracer similar line that was your putt - and yous can visually compare the 2.
Play mode...
A few more comments not already mentioned elsewhere…
Hole Fly-Over - earlier starting each pigsty there is a too quick fly-over showing you the full general layout of the green; there are little numbered markers for each role player'southward starting position. Information technology might be helpful to ho-hum this downward a bit, or peradventure give the user suspension/rewind buttons.
Pigsty Bore - allow a role player to select the larger cup option (currently in Main Program Settings) for themselves; eg. a child playing against a parent.
Hole Capture - all the testers agreed information technology seemed more than strict vs Claiming and also Exercise modes ... for example, some brusk, firm putts that seemed to drop in the before modes might continue direct over the hole here. Might be amend if this were more consistent across all modes, or least a user-selectable choice.
Scorecard - only shows you the total number of strokes per hole, which includes both your GIR strokes and your putts, and so the total score for 9 holes. Shows you the green speed selected only does not show y'all the course name. I experience it would be helpful info to also display each player's total Number of Putts and Average Putts per Hole; and perhaps even an "Avg Distance From Pigsty on 1st Putt" stat.
Virtual camera...
Later hit a putt the view randomly jumps from "Beginning Person" .. where you lot're watching the putt from where you're standing (which to me would exist the nigh useful so y'all can watch the brawl gyre the entire manner – ie. this is a do training assist) to a more than video game-similar view of "Overhead-Follow" (where you don't actually see very much of your putt) or ... in Challenge and Play ... "Behind the Hole" (kind of a ground-level shut-upward – and sometimes the upside-down spinning pyramid that indicates the hole location really blocks the view of the ball coming in – and honestly I don't sympathise the reasoning behind using this view other than for game-like entertainment?). I'd brand this a user-selectable option and so it can stay consistent (or include "Random" as the default option?).
Remote...
Minor criticism: the back button on the remote shouldever accept the user dorsum one footstep in the system; eg. exit Practise mode to return to the chief menu, etc.
Proceed TO Utilize OR STASH IN Closet?
Score: twenty of 20!
I will absolutely go along using the ExPutt! And regularly!
While I will not be using every available feature on a regular basis (for case, personally I can skip the putting analysis embedded in Exercise style), virtually frequently I volition exist using...
- Exercise – at Random distances / Max of 30 feet / Dark-green Speed nine or 10
(...and occasionally a Dark-green Speed of eight or 11, or Max of fifty) - Challenge and Play – on Bound and Summer courses / Green Speed 9 or 10
(...along with an occasional foray onto the Fall or Wintertime class)
And it's as well fun on those rainy days when we're stuck inside and my married woman says, "Allow's accept a putting contest!"
---
** CONCLUSION...
ExPutt – despite my numerous comments on interface / usability issues – provides a great way to practise ... anytime at home ... varying distance putts up to 50 feet, putts on faster or slower greens and breaking putts of dissimilar types. Yes – it'southward a computer simulation, and so yeah – it's less than perfect and less ideal than getting exterior onto a very large, well-maintained and well-sloped bodily practice green, but ... for those of us who practise not access to such a practice light-green it'southward much better than the standard (apartment, express length) putting mat.
Although it appears I may have been strict in my scoring – once again, due to interface and usability problems I feel could be cleaned upwards and better presented – at that place is a lot of good information and feedback provided, along with the multiple usage modes, that makes the ExPutt a valuable putting grooming assist.
I actually like the product – information technology'due south fun to employ and no question has helped my on-form putting – and I volition continue to utilise it. I wait forward to seeing how future versions build upon what they have here.
